What is Stored Product Insects? (SPI)
As indicated in the name, SPI are mainly beetles or moths that infest stored dried food and are commonly referred to as pantry pests. Besides home, SPI infest grains and food products at the warehouse, processing plant, retail store, etc. Almost all dried food products are vulnerable to attack by the SPI. If you keep finding the same moth or beetle in your kitchen or pantry, it may be a good indication of SPI infestation.
Recognizing the common SPI
Knowing some of te common species of SP will help you to locate the likely sources of infestation.
Cigarette Beetle (Lasioderma Serricorne)
-Adult is oval shape and about 2-3mm long, light brown and head is often concealed when viewed from above
-Attack many stored products such as cigarettes, coffee beans, dried fruits, herbs. grains, flour, spices, herbarium specimens, etc.
Red Flour Beetle (Tribolium Castaneum)
-Adult is flattened about 3-4mm long and reddish brown.
-Can fly short distances.
-Feed on flour, beans, cereals, shelled nuts, dried fruits, milk cocolate, etc.
RedLegged Ham Beetle (Necrobia Rufipes)
-Adult is about 3.5-7mm in length, body elongate and narrow, shiny metallic blue or green colour.
-Breed on smoky meats, dog foods, cheese and bones.
Foreign Grain Beetle (Ahasverus Advena)
-Adult is flattened about 2-3mm long and reddish brown.
-Adults are strong fliers and are attracted to damp, mouldy and out-of-control grains.
-They are scavengers, feeding on mouldy grains, cereal products, etc. where it feeds on the mould and fungi which grows on such materials.
Rice Weevil (Sitophilus Oryzae)
-Adult is about 2-3m long, reddish brown to black with four reddish or yellowish spots on the wings. Attack rice, wheat, barley, nuts, dried beans, etc.
Almond Moth (Cadra Cautella)
-Adult moth is about 13mm in length, have grey colour wings with indistinct markings.
-Mature larve has 4 rows of brown spots down back.
-Its larvae infest flour, grains, cereals, cocoa beans, dried fruits, etc.
Indianmeal Moth (Plodia Interpunctella)
-Adult moth is about 8-10mm in length, reddish brown with peculiar markings on the forewings.
-The larvae can be found in seeds, dried fruit, spices, grain products, etc.
